Allocution d'Etienne POURCHER pour l'accueil de vétérans américains à Frémifontaine, juillet 2014
C’est le 70e anniversaire de la Libération de nos villages qui nous rassemble. Au-delà du plaisir de retrouver nos amis américains, j’ai ici une pensée particulière pour mon ami Lawson Sakai, pourquoi perpétuer cette mémoire, me direz-vous ?
we gather here today to commemorate the 70th anniversary of The Wold War II liberation of our village. Why is it so important to make this day so special - you may ask? Except, of course, the pleasure to meet our American friends; I have at this time a special though for my friend Lawson Sakai.
Avec le temps, le risque est grands que les jeunes générations oublient que l’Europe était alors sous le joug du nazisme, un régime dirigé par le dictateur Hitler, basé sur la discrimination envers les étrangers, les juifs, les homosexuels, les communistes. Toutes catégories que les nazis exterminaient dans les camps de la mort. Si l’on oublie que l’on était déporté, condamné à mourir, juste parce que l’on était différent, alors l’horreur peut recommencer.
We, people of the Vosges Region, want to do this because we want to say Thank you but also to teach all new generations that should not forget what happened here under Nazi Regime in 1940s. It is important not to forget because it also should not be repeated by anybody and anywhere again. Nazi forces promoted discrimination towards anybody that was different, foreigners, Jewish, homosexuals, communist etc. These were all categories which Nazi were targeting and putting in their death camps.
Le Général de Gaulle, depuis Londres, lança l’appel à la résistance, reforma la 1re armée française. Nos parents et grands-parents, pour beaucoup y ont résisté. Ici même, à Frémifontaine, 3 jeunes résistants furent déportés et un seul revint vivant des camps.
General De Gaulle from London, England sent the call for resistance forces and helped us form the first army here to resist this Nazi regime. Our grandparents, parents and neighbors were there, getting into first rows of Resistance forces. Three young resistance members from this village Fremifontaine, were taken to the camp and only one came back alive.
Mais la guerre contre le nazisme, le nationalisme, ne fut remportée que grâce à l’engagement sans faille de nos alliés anglais et américains, dont la France vient de célébrer le 70è anniversaire du débarquement sur les plages de Normandie. En Provence, un 2e débarquement permit à des troupes courageuses de remonter vers nos Vosges.
Resistance forces were trying to fight but our victory would not be achieved without help from forces that came from United States of America and England. France just celebrated 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy and while D-Day was happening in the same time forces in Provence were gaining ground towards Vosges.
Ici à Frémifontaine, n’oublions pas les « native americains » et autres jeunes GI de la 45e auxquels ce monument rend hommage. A leurs côtés, les « nisei » du 100/442, délivraient Bruyères et Biffontaine dans une bataille meurtrière qui permit à Hawai d’avoir son étoile sur le drapeau américain, de devenir enfin un Etat à part entière.
These forces were made out of Native Americans came over here to fight as a part of 45th Division to whom we want to thank for all the efforts. Along with them Japanese forces 100/442 who liberated Bruyères and Biffontaine. To thank these forces Hawaii got the golden star on the American flag.
Comment ne pas s’incliner devant le sacrifice de ces japonais-américains, dont les familles étaient internées dans des camps aux Etats-Unis, par défiance et qui ont combattu, pour prouver leur patriotisme américain, leur fidélité au drapeau « stars and stripes » ? Comment ne pas s’incliner devant ces jeunes – ils avaient 20 ans – sans qui nous serions toujours sous une dictature nationaliste ?
How can we simple say Thank you for these efforts and courage? How can we show respect to all these guys whose families were in camps in united states and who came to help and show their patriotism by standing under “stars and stripes”? How can we show respect to those young souls, who were barely in their 20s?
A travers moi, c’est le peuple vosgien qui vous dit Merci du fond du cœur ! Chers vétérans, recevez notre gratitude indéfectible. Chères familles de vétérans, et leurs amis, soyez fiers de leurs sacrifice immense.
Ces monuments sont de pierres mais ce sont nos cœurs qui s’enflamment année après année pour le souvenir.
I am standing here in front of all of you today on behalf of all the people and friends from Vosges to say “These statues are made out of stone to withstand the time but in our hearts we carry the flame and respect for generations to come.
Avec le « memorial day des enfants », cher Jean-Marie Siret, ce sont chaque année de jeunes générations qui portent la flamme de ce souvenir.
Chers amis, chers compatriotes, notre devoir est de maintenir cette flamme, de transmettre aux générations futures cette liberté si chère que vous nous avez léguée et que vous avez rétablie « des montagnes aux prairies, et jusqu’aux océans à l’écume blanche » comme le dit votre hymne national.
We teach our kids that during their memorial day, cherish and carry this flame that is in our hearts and memories because this is the least that we owe to these people who gave their lives for^p our better tomorrows. We are thankful and grateful for your courage and efforts today, tomorrow and many more generations to come!”
Thank you for the Liberty you spilled “From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam”.
